The Bluebirds are currently sixth due to their superior goal difference but Westwood is looking forward to the challenge of helping blunt their attack.

“It is a big game for both of us,” he conceded. “If we win, we will leapfrog them.

“That’s a massive incentive for us and hopefully we can grab the bull by the horns.”

After their trip to the Cardiff City Stadium, the Owls travel to lowly MK Dons and Westwood reckons they are set up to perform well on the road.

“You have to be more compact and play more counter attacking football away from home,” he said. “I think that suits us. The lads cover an awful lot of grass and that’s credit to them.

“There are a few teams like us who are trying to break into the top six.

“We have got two tough away comes coming up. No one ever gives you anything in this league. You have to earn it and make sure you work damn hard to come out with the three points.”

While Carvalhal will be able to call upon experienced defender Michael Turner again following a lengthy lay-off due to a knee injury, Jack Hunt is still nursing a calf problem as the Owls chase their first win at Cardiff since 2007.
