The midfielder, who claimed his maiden Wednesday goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Cardiff City, has been a revelation since arriving on a free transfer from Crystal Palace in August. His current deal is due to run out next summer but the Scotland international is thought to be on the brink of committing his future to eighth-placed Wednesday until 2020.

“When I first arrived, we were closer to the bottom,” he told The Star. “We have put an unbelievable run together. We are quietly confident of getting in the top six.

“We have got a good team. We are doing really well. We know ourselves where we want to finish. The target is to get back into the Premier League and keep looking upwards. I think everybody knows now that we are force in this league so hopefully we can be there or thereabouts.”

On prolonging his Hillsborough stay, Bannan added: “It (new contract) is very close. It has almost been agreed. I am just waiting now and hopefully it will get done in the next week or two.

“We have been talking for a while. I have enjoyed it since coming here. The fans have taken to me and I have had some good performances. They have wanted me to sign up for a bit now.”

“It is a boost when you feel wanted. When you feel loved, your game goes to an extra level. I think my game has gone to an extra level because I can feel the affection of the fans, the manager and players so it is no brainer to stay here.

“I enjoy the way we play football, this way suits my game perfectly and I’m thriving on it on because the gaffer has given me great confidence, so why would you want to leave?”
