A kid, a voice, a challenge - Heroes & Villains as Sheffield Wednesday woes worsen at Nottingham Forest

Things went from bad to worse for Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night as they fell to a lacklustre defeat against out-of-form Nottingham Forest, and it’s hard to find any reasons to be cheerful.

And it’s pretty tough to find heroes and villains, really, from what was ultimately a nothing performance from the Owls. In the second half, against a Forest side struggling for clean sheets, they had no shots - on or off target - and didn’t even win a single corner. They offered zero, and Tony Pulis now has the worst start of any Wednesday manager in history – LDDDLLLL.

Liam Shaw

At 19, Shaw is still a kid, and is certainly deserving of a bit more leeway that his senior teammates, but regardless of his age, he was one of the few to really take anything away from last night’s game.

It would’ve been easy to be a bag of nerves, not just because of Wednesday’s current situation, but also because he was sent off in his last outing after being given a start.

Yet he was composed, calm and put in a pretty solid performance in the centre of the park.

Chey Dunkley

While it wasn’t the best performance from him, like any of his teammates really, you absolutely cannot fault Dunkley’s commitment to the cause.

From shouting that he needed more from those around him to chastising the physios for not dealing with Joost van Aken’s injury quickly enough, Dunkley has the makings of a real leader at the back.

His vocalness didn’t seem to go down too well with everybody, but that level of duty he feels can only be a positive going forward.

Lewis Grabban?

For a villain, Grabban. But only really for petty reasons – he’s now got six goal contributions in 12 against Wednesday, scoring three in his last six against the Owls.

He’s been injured and on a barren run even pre-injury, but he came off the bench and broke his duck against an obliging Wednesday team. The way he did it however, with a challenge on Tom Lees, didn’t go down well.

Pulis certainly wasn’t happy about it, saying, “The challenge on Tom for the second goal is a disgrace. It could’ve been a leg-breaker. He has stud marks above the knee, it was a really shocking challenge.”
