Keeping hold of Steven Fletcher is right up there on Sheffield Wednesday’s list of priorities for next season, and a teammate has added his voice to those calling for him to stay.

Fletcher has had an impressive season for the Owls in 2019/20, scoring 13 goals in the Championship despite missing a chunk of the season due to injury.

Now though, while football remains at a standstill, the situation regarding his expiring contract still looms large, with the Scotsman set to part ways from the club at the end of the season as things currently stand.

Dominic Iorfa, who has been a standout performer for Garry Monk’s side this season, says that he hopes the 33-year-old stays at Hillsborough, calling him ‘one of the best in the league’.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Iorfa said, "It would be a big boost if we were able to keep Fletch. He is a big player for us. Obviously, you always want to keep your best players so hopefully he signs.

“It is not a surprise to me that he has had a good season. He is a really good striker and one of the best in the league at what he does as well.

"He has been a big player for us and was really good in the first half of the season. When he got injured in January, he was a big miss for us. It was a shame he got injured at the time that he did."

It is thought that talks have got underway been Wednesday management and Fletcher’s representatives, but the fact that he’s yet to put pen to paper on a new contract is something that will no doubt be a worry for Wednesdayites across the city.

Fletcher has proven to be one of the club’s shrewdest purchases in recent years having joined the club as a free agent back in 2016, with the forward having gone on to score almost 40 goals in Wednesday colours to date.
