Keiren Westwood: ‘Off the wall’ but ‘really good' - Tony Pulis on the Sheffield Wednesday stopper and him being frozen out in the past

Pulis made his thoughts on the 36-year-old very clear when he arrived at Hillsborough, moving quickly to register him for the Championship after the former manager, Garry Monk, had opted not to use him at all.

Westwood got hit with some injury disappointment not long after being put back into the Owls XI, but was deemed fit enough to face the Sky Blues at S6 as the Owls continued their search for a first win under the new boss.

The Republic of Ireland international went on to put in an impressive showing and keep a clean sheet against Coventry, with Tom Lees’ goal proving to be the difference, and Pulis was very pleased with his efforts.

He said after the game, “He’s been good, he’s been really good… The problem has been that he’s picked up a couple of injuries. But he’s always wanted to play, he’s always wanted to be part of it.

“He’s travelled with us, been a good voice in the changing room. He can be a bit off the wall at times, but goalkeepers are… I don’t think I’ve ever met a sensible, level-headed goalkeeper.”

When asked if he was surprised that he’s been frozen out in the past, Pulis insisted that he couldn’t criticise, saying, “I don’t criticise any managers who have been in my position. They do what they have to, and there’s different ways to manage - there isn’t one set rule.

“Other managers, if they’ve not picked him then they’ve had a reason for not picking him.”

Meanwhile, the shot-stopper himself took to social media after the game to thank the club’s medical team for his quick recovery from injury, tweeting, “I would also like to shoutout the medical staff. Especially Antonio and Luke who have got me back from a 4-6 week injury in three weeks. They’ve really put the work in with me. 9-5 everyday, but it’s all been worth it. Really appreciate it lads.”

Next up for Wednesday is a trip to Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day.
