The manager himself is upbeat ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Leeds, insisting: “We can turn things around.”

Jones has been impressed by the mood of his players and says that there is no lack of confidence despite seven defeats in the last eight games. One of the factors inspiring optimism is the closeness that the team have come to winning games they have drawn or lost.

“The mood of the players in really good,- strong and confident, and that goes right through the club” Jones told The Star. “They’re disappointed, like everybody else, with the results, but everybody is upbeat and wanting to do well, and the players are working really hard. We know we’re getting closer. It will change for us. It will turn. “

Work has been done in training during the international break on fine-tuning the team’s game. “We’ve worked on a lot of things, including, defending, attacking, team shape,” added Jones.

“The players have had a couple of days off, but they’re a group who want to work, and that’s what we’ve done.”

The Leeds game is another test against an established Championship side, in a division where the newly-promoted Owls have been having to learn the hard way while bedding in a lot of new players. “We’ve been getting closer to what we want, but it takes time, and some of the results haven’t matched the performances,” added Jones. “Against Hull in our last game we created chances. Probably in the second half we didn’t play as well as we can.”

On the transition from League One to the Championship, he said: “We’ve been trying to change something; it would have been nice if it was possible to do it in one fell swoop. But it’s a learning curve for everybody.”
