Joey Pelupessy perplexed over Sheffield Wednesday home form after Luton loss

The reasons behind the fact that Sheffield Wednesday are locked in their longest winless streak at Hillsborough since the 1970s are a mystery to midfielder Joey Pelupessy.

The Owls crashed to a 1-0 defeat to Luton Town to ensure their wait for a second Hillsborough win in 2020 goes on. Boss Garry Monk said he accepts responsibility for the run, saying his much-changed side should not bear the brunt.

Pelupessy, one of the squad’s longer-serving members, denied there was a mental block on performances at S6 after his first league start of the season.

“For me personally, no,” he said. “There was a lockdown in between and the more you talk about it, the harder it becomes. Personally I don’t want to talk about it.

“We focus on the next game and whether that is home or away I don’t care.”

Asked the reasons behind the run of form, he said: “It’s a good question and it’s really hard to answer. It’s better if we focus as a team on every game, whether that’s home or away.

“For me it’s not a big thing [mentally] and in the dressing room we don’t speak about it. If we focus on that, then we are focusing on things we can’t control.

“We need to stick together and go for our next chance. We need points, everybody knows that, but we need to work hard and improve every day. We need to focus on the next game. Of course we are disappointed and of course we need to look at what happened, but we need to focus on the next one.”

Joost van Aken was shown a straight red card for a late challenge midway through the second half of the Luton defeat, a moment Pelupessy saw differently to the referee.

He said: “It happened quickly, but I didn’t have the feeling it was a red card. He didn’t stretch his leg and his studs weren’t coming into the player, when the ball was coming to him he was bending his knee.

“In my opinion it was a yellow. I haven’t seen the video back yet but I didn’t see a red card.”
