Jamie Vardy rules out one move as Sheffield Wednesday chatter continues
The Jamie Vardy to Sheffield Wednesday rumours are doing the rounds once again.
Free agent former England forward Jamie Vardy has ruled out a return to the club he scored 200 goals for - as whispers of a possible move to Sheffield Wednesday continue across the city.
The 39-year-old boyhood Wednesdayite is the subject of widespread interest this summer after his time at relegated Serie A side Cremonese effectively came to an end ahead of the end of his contract later this month. As previously reported, Wednesday are believed to have discussed an ambitious possible move for the player that was released from the Owls academy as a teenager in 2002.
The Star has no reason to believe any potential deal is beyond the stage of exploratory discussions as things stand, with plenty still to be worked on behind the scenes as Wednesday launch into a major rebuild mission. Incoming sporting director Simon Wilson is yet to be unveiled, though it’s understood that announcement could come at any time. Talks with existing players over contracts and early days discussion over wider tagets goes on.
Among the clubs reported to be interested in taking Vardy on are Dutch giants Feyenoord and clubs in the Premier League. Vardy has suggested he will take his time with deciding his next move and what’s clear for now at least is that retirement is not on the cards - and that a dramatic return to Leicester will not be his next move.
“I’m not going to give up playing just yet but it’s something more for later down the line,” he said on his new podcast ‘Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party’. Later asked about a potential reunion at the King Power Stadium, he said simply: “Nah, that’s gone. I’ll always support them (Leicester) and follow them, that’s the best thing I can do now.”
