When Stuart Gray identified Jacques Maghoma as probably the Owls’ best player against Blackpool it was another sign of his resurgence,
Maghoma and his boss both feel that he just needs more goals to make an even bigger impact.
The summer signing could get another chance at Macclesfield today to add to the one he has netted so far.
Maghoma says that his progress was hindered by his pre-season ankle injiury. But no-one is dissatisfied with his work-rate in attacking and defending and the way he has nagged opposing sides with his pace and skill. He has also been having strikes at goal
“I feel for Jacques,” says Gray. “He was probably our best player against Blackpool. The only downside is he’s desperate for a goal. I’ve no qualms about anybody taking shots, unless somebody is in a better position.”
“Credit to Jacques and Chris Maguire: they did well on the outsides of the pitch, and defended well when they had to.”
Maghoma has started seven of the last eight games but was largely a peripheral figure under Dave Jones.
“I came here full of confidence from League Two and Burton Albion; we’d been in the play-offs and I had a good summer,” he says. “Then I got injured in the friendly at Stockport. My ankle took longer to heal than I had thought; it was my movement that was affected; it’s a big part of my game.
“I’ve come in and I’ve had to work hard to keep my shirt. It’s not guaranteed that you play every week.
“I was pleased to get my first goal, against Bournemouth. I know we lost but it was still nice to get off the mark. Hopefully I will get more goals.
“I’m still adapting to this level and have to improve certain aspects of my game.
“I’m just happy to be on the pitch and working hard. Every performance counts for every individual.”
