Jack Marriott to Derby County? The return of Sam Hutchinson? What about Jordan Rhodes? Five transfer questions that need to be answered at Sheffield Wednesday

It’s eerily quiet on the transfer front at Sheffield Wednesday, midway through a transfer window that the club’s two previous managers described as ‘vital’.

But there’s time and these months rarely go by without something of a flurry at the death.

It closes in less than three weeks, though some loan deals and free transfers could in theory be completed afterwards.

These are just five of the questions that need answering.

The sacking of Tony Pulis seems to have put the brakes on Sam Hutchinson's return to Sheffield Wednesday. The sacking of Tony Pulis seems to have put the brakes on Sam Hutchinson's return to Sheffield Wednesday.

What about the youngsters?

They’re the talk of the town right now and rightly so after Liam Shaw, Ryan Galvin and Ciaran Brennan put on an excellent defensive display at Exeter. But in terms of the short-term development of Wednesday’s youth core, there are questions to be answered on the best foot forward.

The plan appeared to involve pushing some of them out on loan for half a season’s first team involvement, but the club’s coronavirus outbreak has shown the frailties a squad can have this season and they may wish to keep all of their assets close.

For the likes of Alex Hunt, in and out of contention in the last year, a loan move would surely be beneficial.

Again, it could all hinge on squad depth and who, or how many, they bring in.

Who’s going to score the goals?

After four wins in their last five games, it’s perhaps a little easier to overlook a goal scoring headache that has plagued Wednesday since, well, injury to Steven Fletcher over a year ago.

Callum Paterson has three in three and Josh Windass is hoping for a return to fitness sometime after the Coventry fixture, but there remains a dearth of goals in the squad.

A goal-getter is key, creativity from midfield is too, and both would be added in an ideal world as the Owls look to climb out of the relegation conversation. It won’t be easy; Wednesday aren’t as minted as they once were and it’s a contricted market. But they need goals.

What’s happening with Jack Marriott?

It looks like it may well be coming to an end, but some clarity would no doubt be appreciated at both ends of the deal.

Marriott, like Aden Flint, arrived on deadline day to cap what appeared to be a successful transfer window for the club. Both suffered major injuries and Flint’s fate has already been sealed; he’s gone back to Cardiff.

You’d have to assume Marriott will remain at Derby County, where he’s been training for the past few weeks.

What about Sam Hutchinson?

Tony Pulis wanted to bring him in. Sam Hutchinson agreed a release from his contract with APOEL. Tony Pulis was sacked.

So it’s all in limbo, you feel. Last month Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri described the fact that a deal for Hutchinson is by no means off the table and that it may well still happen, but it’ll be over to a new manager, surely, to sanction a deal.

With Massimo Luongo out, some cover in midfield would be nice.

What is Jordan Rhodes’ future?

It’s been a question asked in every transfer window since he arrived.

There were reports of interest, there were reports rubbishing that interest. All we know for sure is that, with his contract up this summer, things have not gone right for the club-record signing. A clean break is needed for everybody.
