“It’s unlikely they’ll make it…” – Sheffield Wednesday duo set to miss out as Garry Monk gives updates on Dominic Iorfa, Izzy Brown, Tom Lees & Co.

Sheffield Wednesday could still be quite depleted by the time they face Birmingham City this weekend, but Garry Monk is determined to give his players as long as possible to get themselves in contention.

Speaking in today’s press conference, the Owls boss gave updates on several key players that were injured either before or during the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers, and while a couple are set to miss out, Monk appears hopeful that the likes of Dominic Iorfa and Izzy Brown could at least make the matchday squad.

What Monk revealed about Iorfa today amid Watford & Premier League reports

He told the media, “I’m going to give everyone as much time as possible for this game… We have today and we have tomorrow, but it’s hard to tell. Some aren’t going to make it, some might make it - it’s like anything, whatever is thrown at us we’ll have to deal with it.

“It’s not ideal going into a period like this without a full strength squad. It’s one of those things.

“With Tom (Lees) and Liam Shaw, it’s unlikely that they’ll make it, the others are outside chances. With the others I’ll give them as long as I can to be in contention - whether that’s starting or on the bench.”

For specific player updates he said:

Izzy Brown

I’ll give him as long as I can… He had a kick on the knee against Bristol, more like a dead leg situation. It’s just a case of managing that swelling, sometimes those dead legs can last for however long. If he feels good for this game then that’s great.

Dominic Iorfa

Scans are good to give you a parameter of what the injury is, but like with Dom’s, what we thought was a serious hamstring injury turned out not to be so.

Of course the scan will tell you the grade of the tear or whatever that may be, but clinically a lot of these things can be worked out differently and accelerated. So Dom’s probably a lot further ahead of where we thought he’d be, he’s back out on the pitches and he’s running. He’s pretty much up to a sprint, and I’ll give him as long as I can.

Liam Shaw

“It’s not a serious injury, it’s just more about the swelling. It was quite a bad sprain because of the way it rolled.”

Chey Dunkley

Chey has had his pins out, he’s had the greenlight to get out on the pitches now. It’s about building him up now… He’s been ultra professional and done all the work, he’s in a good place now, it’s just about seeing how quickly we can progress him without putting him in any danger.

Osaze Urhoghide

Osaze has been training for a couple of weeks, has played a few U23 games. He’s further ahead, and has been in with the squad, so yeah, he’s available.

Wednesday face Birmingham at 3pm on Saturday afternoon as Monk looks to get one over on his former employers and continue to chip away at the 12-point deduction that they’ve already reduced to seven points.
