The 46-year-old, who was linked with the Owls job last year, was involved in a set-to with Wednesday players Josh Windass and Callum Paterson after the final whistle after he was accused by Wednesday players of trying to get Izzy Brown sent off for a late tackle.

Speaking after the game, Rowett was steadfast in his opinion that Brown should have seen red.

“They were fortunate,” he said. “I thought there should have been a red card at the end. It was a really poor tackle.

“It sums up the officiating when there are no fans here, everyone just lets everything go. It’s right in front of the fourth official.

“If there’s a crowd there, I’m not saying the reaction gets a red card, but it has an effect. I don’t want to see any player get sent off but it was a clear red card. I find it strange.”

On why his side drew the game on an afternoon that saw few clear cut chances, Rowett offered an honest assessment of his side’s performance.

He also said the events of the past week at S6 had raised Wednesday, as he predicted in midweek.

“I thought we were poor, it's as simple as that. We tried to overplay when we didn't need to overplay and Sheffield Wednesday were brighter than us," he admitted.

“It was a combination of Sheffield Wednesday winning their last game and then being given six points back at the same time, that’s undoubtedly going to give you a lift.

“We tried to over play, we were poor at the back on the ball, 50 per cent of it was them being brighter than us and 50 per cent was us giving the ball away needlessly in lots and lots of areas.

“Sheffield Wednesday probably should have won the game, but you’ve got to go and score. You can give a team opportunities, but they’ve got to go and take them. Thankfully they didn’t.”
