'It killed the atmosphere' - Sheffield United star speaks out on VAR controversy and suggests changes

Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram has spoken out on the VAR decision that denied his side a goal in their 1-1 draw with Spurs earlier in the month, and has suggested a way in which the system could be improved.

In an entertaining affair at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, David McGoldrick tucked the ball beyond Paulo Gazzaniga to spark wild scenes in the away end, but Lundstram was subsequently adjudged to have been a fraction offside in the build-up to the goal.

The decision to rule the Blades' goal out involved a lengthy delay, and in an interview with Sky Sports, Lunny spoke strongly about his frustration with the time taken to disallow the goal, as well as suggesting a way to improve the system.

He said: "That was annoying. I think they've got to bring that time down; if they cut it to, say, 60 seconds, it wouldn't be too bad but you're waiting for so long…it killed the atmosphere; it killed the celebrations for the fans and the players."

VAR frustrations aside, United will be delighted with their strong start to the season, which has seen them weather a tough run of fixtures and head into the international break sitting fifth in the Premier League table.

Sunday afternoon's eagerly-anticipated clash against Manchester United will be another opportunity for Chris Wilder's side to pick up more points, when they take on a Red Devils side who have looked a shadow of their dominant, former selves this season.
