'Full-blooded' midfielder strong favourite for Sheffield Wednesday award
Svante Ingelsson is the strong favourite for end-of-season award
Voting is open for Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Year award for the 2025/2026 season.
Supporters can now choose who they think is worthy of the award by making their selection on the club’s official website.
Unlike in years gone by when there were numerous contenders, reaction to the vote opening has been met with only one answer. That is the name of Svante Ingelsson, the 26-year-old Swedish midfielder whose all-action, whole-hearted, full-blooded displays have stood out in what has truly been a miserable season. He has worn his heart on his sleeve and the shirt with pride.
On paper, his statistics do not jump off the page, with only one goal. But that is not a true reflection of his fully committed performances, non-stop running, all-round physical output and passion. In a campaign when the treatment room has been full, Ingelsson has always been available for selection, although ironically he could miss Saturday’s finale against West Brom - which is when the winner will be handed the trophy - with a knee problem which has ruled him out of the last three matches.
In years to come when fans are asked about this rotten season, they will remember Ingelsson’s dedication to the cause. He stayed in January despite interest. And they will always appreciate the fight he showed during - and after - that game at Bramall Lane.
Are there any other possible contenders who could sneak it? Pierce Charles and Max Lowe could have been in the running had they avoided injury. Liam Palmer has played in 44 out of 46 league games, as has Jamal Lowe. Jerry Yates has had a fairly successful spell in the second-half of the season, netting four times. But, other than that, you are scratching around for names.
Ingelsson is the obvious favourite and he would be a worthy winner. The question over the summer will be whether they can keep him, with recent interest from Stoke City, as we exclusively revealed last week.
In today’s modern game, Ingelsson is a bit of a throwback. For what he lacks in technical ability he makes up for with heart and desire. That is all what fans ask for, especially in a season like this. Whether he leaves this summer or in five years, he will always be welcome back.
