'I don't think we do' - Sheffield Wednesday manager defends 'simple' role midfielder is being asked to do

Your latest Owls news...

Owls boss Henrik Pedersen has offered some insight into the role Callum Slattery is being asked to do in the team.

The summer signing from Motherwell was Sheffield Wednesday’s best player in the opening month of the campaign, scoring and assisting in wins against Leyton Orient and Bromley. He came off the bench to help secure a comeback victory in the EFL Trophy against Salford City but has not scored or assisted in any of the last five league matches.

His strongest performances have come playing in the ‘10.’ Although it has looked like the 27-year-old has been asked to play out wide at times, such as in the second-half against Huddersfield Town last weekend, Pedersen does not necessarily fully agree with that assessment.

“He has played in the 10 all the time offensively,” he explained. “Then sometimes he has pressed from the right side. He's a strong, strong pressing player. Then when we are on the ball, he's always central of the pitch. I think this is his best position. He's working so much to open up his body to speed up the game, and his position now, if you look, he is starting to have much more stability to find good positions, to have more influence in the game, and he is working to get more assists. He working to get more finishing. He working to get more crossing. He working to get more shots. But I think he is a very strong player for us.”

When asked if they putting a lot of demands on him tactically, Pedersen replied: “I don't think we do. I think he has a very simple job where you don't have to think so much, so he can use his energy. Every player needs to run when the others have the ball, but we also need to run when we have the ball. I think his defensive jobs have been quite simple for him. And then offensively, I think he's growing. I'm looking forward to see more from him.

“I think he was really, really strong in the beginning (of the season). Then I think he had a little curve down, and then when he came in against Salford, he was maybe the best man on the pitch. And then from there he has again pushed up.”

Wednesday set to be without Slattery for at least one game soon enough. The midfielder is a booking away from receiving a one-match ban for accumulation of yellow cards. With the cut-off point for five bookings not until December, it seem inevitable he will have to sit out a fixture in the near future.

“I wish I could manage this,” Pedersen smiled. “I'm not sure it's in my control, but yes, we have spoken about it, but a yellow card until I think the Leicester game - I think it will be a big challenge for Slat. We take it when it happens.”

Wednesday return to league action on Saturday afternoon when they host AFC Wimbledon. The Owls are unbeaten in eight but have drawn their last three in the league. On their next opponents, Pedersen added: “It's a strong, defensive, very well organised team. They are a physically strong team, really strong in the medium block, and then from there they play some very quick transition. They can play very, very direct and play with a lot of intensity to bring a lot of players to our box. So it's a very well organised team and a very physical, strong team.”
