The German-born Congo international, who joined the club on a free transfer last week, was released by Championship rivals Huddersfield Town this summer after four seasons with the club.

And speaking to the media ahead of Kachunga’s likely debut at Cardiff on Saturday, Monk said the forward had clearly arrived at Hillsborough on a one-year contract and with a point to prove having been part of the Terriers side that was promoted to the Premier League through the playoffs back in 2017.

“I think you’ve seen, in terms of the Championship, what he can be,” Monk said. “He was part of a successful Huddersfield team that got promoted, so he knows what this league is all about and he knows what it is to be successful in this league.

“Characteristics-wise, he was hungry to come here. He wants to stay in England and prove a point.”

Kachunga missed out on selection in the Carabao Cup draw at Walsall but was confirmed as fit for contention in Wales this weekend by Monk, who speaking last week said he intends to use him as a central striker after he spent the last few seasons playing out wide.

Boasting an otherwise modest scoring record, Kachunga has scored 46 goals and 22 assists in 150 games when playing as a centre forward or second striker and joins Jordan Rhodes and fellow new boy Josh Windass in jostling for minutes up front.

Describing Kachinga’s playing style, Monk said: “Attributes-wise, he’s a little bit more dynamic, he’s got quicker feet and he’s elusive in that sense, he has pace about him and he’s different to what we’ve got and that will be a big contributor for us this season.

“He’s come in, he’s fitted straight in with the lads and he knows what it’s all about.

“That’s key, having that little bit of experience, in what we’re facing. The players we’ve brought in aside from Fisayo [Dele-Bashiru] all have good experience of the Championship and know what it’s all about.”
