Hungover shuttle runs in Hyde Park: Former Sheffield Wednesday man Phil King on the day after the 1991 Rumbelows Cup final

The left-back, who speaking to The Star admitted the whole weekend was one that passed him by at times, described moments with the fans after the final whistle as some of the best of his career.

A goal by his roommate John Sheridan was enough to give the Owls a historic win, of course, sparking celebrations the now-pub landlord describes as ‘truly epic’.

“It was incredible, everything, celebrating with he fans and then Gordon Watson in that sombrero and all the rest of it,” he said.

“We went back to the Royal Lancaster Hotel where our entertainment for the night wasn’t bad, a guy called Paul Carrack, a big Sheffield Wednesday fan.

“He’d written a song, ‘Big Ron’s Barmy Army’. I was pals with him and he’d send me some stuff over before he’d released it. I loved this song, me and my daughter used to sing it in the car.

“The lads had me up on stage with Paul singing this Barmy Army song, the dancefloor was packed. We sang ‘Atkinson’s’ and they’d all sing back ‘Barmy Army!’. Great memories.”

King was not quite as full of the joys of spring the following day, however, especially as Big Ron himself played a cruel praticial joke on his life-sided pairing on a stroll designed to shake off the cobwebs.

“They were heavy celebrations, I made the most of it,” he smiled. “I turned in about four or five o’clock, steaming.

“The next morning Big Ron had us in our tracksuits, off for a walk in Hyde Park and told us to get into pairs and told us to run to the tree and back as a warm-down sort of thing.

“I’m stood next to Worthers and we’re thinking ‘is he winding us up here, we’ve just won the cup!’ We were both worse for wear obviously.

“We lined up and me and Worthers went first, ran to the tree and as we turned around he’s absolutely doubled-over laughing. ‘You idiots’ he says, ‘come on’.

“It was just a wind-up thankfully. I couldn’t have done it!”
