Plum facility, Chalobah, Marcal and Valery - Sheffield Wednesday latest as Eurotrip begins
Sheffield Wednesday are in Europe on the latest step of their summer preparations.
The bulks of Sheffield Wednesday’s squad travelled from Manchester to Budapest on Sunday evening having travelled across from their lunch meet at their Middlewood Road training base. Their home for the week is the Hungrian national football base known as the MLSZ (Hungarian Football Federation) Technical Centre on the outskirts of Telki, a quiet and affluent village based six miles or so outside Budapest itself.
The facility comes highly recommended, with training, gym and analysis facilities on-site as well as a four-star hotel. The facility has been utilised by other professional UK clubs in recent times including Scottish top tier outfit Dundee, who offered positive reviews following their time in Telki earlier this month. The likes of Real Madrid have performed coaching sessions at the base, which acts as Hungary’s version of St George’s Park and houses the central operation of their national team operations. Youth internationals have been hosted at the facility since it was built in 2009.
International star Yan Valery has not made the trip with Wednesday having played in the World Cup with Tunisia earlier this summer. The Star understands there was discussions over whether the 27-year-old would travel in the last fortnight but has been given extra time off. Valery spent the second half of last season on loan with Swiss side Young Boys and is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks amid interest from elsewhere.
Another travel decision made is that of Nathaniel Chalobah, who along with fellow free agent Wanya Marcal has not made the trip to Budapest despite having featured in both friendly run-outs to date. Chalobah, who joined the Owls’ pre-season proceedings midway through their St George’s Park training camp on what was initially described as a training brief, is also thought to have been a consideration to travel at one point but has been granted extra time away. Free agent goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has made the trip.
The decision doesn’t appear to bode especially well in terms of a permanent switch to Wednesday for Marcal, who was brought in as both parties sought to consider the possibilities going forward a couple of weeks ago. The former Leicester youngster is said to have impressed in moments but is raw. No doors have been closed on the situation, as per The Star’s understanding.
Having spent a good deal of time travelling on Sunday and not having landed in Hungary until late evening, Monday is expected to have been a relatively relaxed day comprising of training and preparation, with work to continue in earnest on Tuesday. As part of The Star’s coverage of their European trip, media access has been granted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the trip to Vienna, where they will take on Championship side Stoke City in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
