The Thai businessman wielded the axe on Monday night to bring to an end Monk’s 14-month tenure in the Hillsborough hotseat.

Monk, the 41-year-old former Birmingham City, Leeds United, Swansea City and Middlesbrough boss, had been under increasing pressure from the Wednesday faithful in recent weeks after a poor start to the new campaign which had seen them win just three out of 11 games and fail to score in six of those matches.

The Owls had also won just two of their last 18 matches at Hillsborough and secured their first home victory since February when they defeated relegated AFC Bournemouth last Tuesday. Monk’s final game in charge – his 58th in total with the club – was a 0-0 draw with Millwall at S6 on Saturday.

However, despite the improvement in results during the past week, the club has moved to dispense with the services of Monk and will now look to bring in a new man to help steer them away from the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.

It’s a move nearly eight of 10 supporters have backed on a poll on The Star’s SWFC Twitter page – which ran within minutes of the dismissal until early this morning.

More than 2,150 Wednesdayites responded to it, with 79 per cent supporting the move to fire Monk.

Just six per cent believed Chansiri had acted too hastily in swinging the axe, while 15 per cent said they were not sure if the sacking was the correct move.

Meanwhile, in a second poll on Twitter, we asked Wednesday fans which manager they would like to see take over at Hillsborough.

We gave fans four options to choose from – former Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook, ex-Wednesday striker Ryan Lowe and now Plymouth Argyle manager, former Bournemouth chief Eddie Howe and Owls legend Nigel Pearson – based on bookies odds and names being mentioned on social media.

More than 750 votes were received, with 45 per cent wanting Pearson – out of work since he was sacked by Watford in the summer – 26 per cent plumping for Howe, 20 per cent backing Cook and just nine per cent favouring Lowe.
