This is how transfer dealings are conducted at Sheffield Wednesday - and who gets the final say

Sheffield Wednesday’s recruitment process is no different to that of most clubs, according to manager Garry Monk.

The Owls’ system of signing and selling players has been a subject of myth and mystery to some sections of the club’s support in recent years, with the role of advisors within the club rumoured to have played a significant role in the past.

But Monk quashed any notion that, in is experience, the club’s approach differs wildly from any other and made clear that while the club has the final say on any transfer from a financial standpoint, no player would come in or out of the club without his approval.

The Owls boss described a trilateral system between himself, a dedicated recruitment department and the club that he suggested was typical of clubs around the country.

“It’s an accumulation of the three,” he said. “Ultimately the club will have the final say, ultimately it will always come down to the restrictions financially. They will always have the final say as to whether something is doable or not.

“The rest of it is an accumulation, myself on the football side of it, what we need and whether that player and the recruitment side analyse those players and suggest those players from an analytical point of view.

“I wouldn’t agree to a player I didn’t think could help us. I give my opinion on that.

“The three lads that came in, they came in with understanding from the recruitment side of it and from my side. They could help us. And of course then it’s for the club to agree whether it is within the parameters we have.”

The existing recruitment department at the club was put together in no small part by Monk predecessor Steve Bruce.

And asked whether he had been frustrated by any recruitment matters in his six month reign at the club – there had been suggestions he had shown a desire to move players on in the January transfer window – Monk said: “We’re not all going to agree on everything.

“I give my opinion, the recruitment have their opinion and the club have their opinion. That’s the way of the world.

“I’m not unhappy with anything. We can all think different things and all think things could be done differently but at the end of the day we did what we can do. The ultimate will always come down to a club decision and will mostly be from a financial point of view.

“That’s whether it's a player leaving, whether that makes sense from a financial stance, or is enough for a club, or coming in, if it’s affordable for the club.

“Those things are always going to be decided by a club. That’s the same at every single other club I know of. Whether you agree or not or whatever you feel, it's just part of the process.”
