Liam Waldock found out on the day of the game that he would be getting his Sheffield Wednesday debut, with an injury to Alex Hunt meaning he was handed a starting berth.

Waldock, who will celebrate his 20th birthday tomorrow, has been in and around the senior setup at Wednesday for some time now, but was only due to be on the bench against Fulham yesterday evening at Craven Cottage.

But when a knock meant that Hunt wouldn’t be risked, the lifelong Owl was told that he would in fact be starting against the Premier League outfit, and consequently getting his professional career well underway.

Garry Monk ‘hopeful’ of new signing before the weekend

Speaking after the game, the SWFC academy graduate – who has been at the club since the U8s – explained how he received the news, saying, “I found out this morning… I was in my room, one of the coaching staff texted me and asked what room number I was in.

“He came up and just said to me that I was starting, wished me good luck and said ‘just do what you do’.”

Meanwhile, he also hopes that his performance gave Monk something to think about, adding, “Obviously I always want to play for Sheffield Wednesday, it’s my club who I’ve always supported. Hopefully tonight I’ve shown some bits to the gaffer that he knows he can trust me in the future, and that if there’s a game that he needs a midfielder, he can choose me.”

Waldock became the 1083rd player to play for Wednesday, and the seventh player this season to be handed an Owls debut.
