A number of Sheffield Wednesday players will have their fitness assessed heading into Tuesday’s Championship clash at Wigan Athletic as Garry Monk reported a busy physio’s room after their 2-1 FA Cup win at Queens Park Rangers.

Several senior players were left at home for the tie and the manager confirmed the absence of for former Rs man Massimo Luongo and Kieran Lee were due to injury.

It is a cause for concern for what is now a bruised midfield, with Sam Hutchinson having hobbled off before the hour. Barry Bannan was rested.

“He said he got a stamp on the foot in the first half and felt he couldn’t quite carry on,” Monk said on Hutchinson.

“Massimo had a sore groin and Kieran, had a shoulder injury from the Leeds game.

“Atdhe [Nuhiu] was ill all week and only came back to train yesterday. Hopefully those guys will be back for Tuesday, if not it will be the weekend.”

Concerns were also raised after Jacob Murphy, a livewire in London, was hauled off midway through the second half.

But Monk had no concerns over the fitness of the winger, who he said was taken off as a precautionary measure.

“Jacob just had cramp and I didn’t want to take any risk,” he said.

“He could have maybe carried on but with cramp you always risk a muscle injury so I didn’t want to do that. I thought he was fantastic tonight.”
