The youngster was suspended for Saturday’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Birmingham having been sent off for two mistimed tackles in the home defeat to Reading.

And Monk said he sees that setback as part of his development, which he believes will be in the heart of the Wednesday defence.

Urhoghide, who burst onto the scene with a man of the match performance in the Owls’ win at Premier League Brighton last month, has four first team appearances under his belt as Monk seeks to change the dynamic of the changing room.

The 40-year-old said: “You can see he's a very honest young lad, he plays with his heart and we have to remember he's playing in a position that is not his ultimate position - he's a centre back, that's how I view him.

“He's filled in in a few of the games and he's filled in in some difficult circumstances and he's always one that will give his all.

“He's one for the future - there's no real criticism, just experience he has to go through. Of course we would like to avoid that [his red card] at this moment, but it is what it is.”

Urhoghide has been exposed to the highs and lows of first team involvement alongside the likes of fellow teenagers Alex Hunt and Preslav Borukov this season.

Saturday was the first time this year that saw Monk name a squad without a teenager involved, with senior men Steven Fletcher and Morgan Fox returning to the squad through injury.

And the Wednesday manager said he believes it is experiences such as his Reading red that will take him and other youngsters forward.

“It was a difficult one for him with the red card. That adds to his experience, it's not needed at this moment,” he said.

“He's a fantastic lad, he's got quite a mature head on young shoulders and he'll always learn from the experience he's getting right now.”
