Pep Guardiola’s side advanced to the quarter-finals with a narrow win with Sergio Aguero scoring the only goal of the game on 53 minutes.

“We were all up for it tonight and we owed ourselves and the fans a performance due to the recent form we have been in, especially at home the manner which we have been losing,” Palmer said.

“To put in a strong performance shows a togetherness, I think that is the pleasing thing.

“It is difficult to impose your game on them, it is a lot of communication and we stuck to our game plan.

“Towards the end in the last 10 minutes we had a bit more of a go and threw caution to the wind and they got a bit nervous and started kicking the ball out for corners but we could not quite capitalise.

“It was a spirited performance from the boys and 1-0 is no disgrace.”

He added: “The message before the game was we had had some good wins in the cup against Brighton - Premier League opposition - and then QPR, a good win there - so we deserved to play against a good team and get a good draw which we did do.”

City’s line-up included the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Rihad Mahrez and Aguero.

The visitors hit the bar twice but substitute Steven Fletcher almost forced extra-time but could not turn in Alex Hunt’s cross.

Palmer said: “We gave a good account of ourselves but we did not quite get there.”

On what Monk said after the game, the right-back added: “He was pleased in the way we went about the game and the way we stuck to our plan and we all dug in as a team and even when the legs are quite heavy we still tried to get up and press them towards the end and we showed a bit of fight and spirit.”
