The Owls boss has excluded the likes of senior men Sam Hutchinson and Keiren Westwood from first team involvement, maintaining they do not contribute to a successful changing room environment.

And asked whether the result could prompt a change of heart when it comes to the senior players exiled from his plans, Monk reiterated his opinion that there is a wider culture issue within the club: “We had the same problems when they were there as well. It is a whole squad problem.

“There are bigger issues. There are not just football issues. There are other issues that need to be conducive to a successful environment and football team.”

Both Westwood and Hutchinson were among the senior players hooked from Jos Luhukay’s squad in 2018.

And Monk, who admitted he knew of cultural issues within the club before he signed on as manager, said: “For various reasons throughout the whole squad, they are not in a position to produce something that will be successful. That is absolutely impossible with his group.

“That needs to change and that will come in the summer regardless of whether I am the manager or not.

“My hope and fight is to get to that point and be able to do that along with the club if is to be successful.”
