A hammering and lots of snow – Sheffield Wednesday’s oddly bad record against Exeter City

This weekend’s meeting will be the 12th time that the two clubs will face off – and the first time in the FA Cup – and for many years the Grecians very much had the Owls’ number.
Only one of the clashes (a 2-2 in 1979) has ended in a draw, while Exeter have managed to pick up seven wins compared to Wednesday’s three, and the Owls have won just one game since the end of the 1970s.

Hide AdProbably the most notable defeat, certainly for the younger generation, was a 5-1 hammering away in the snow at St James Park back in 2010 – a game in which the Owls blew the chance to go top of League One and also signalled the start of a run that saw them win just two of the 17 games that followed.
It was literally the only game to go ahead in League One that day, and a number of fans had helped out to clear the pitch, with Wednesday’s Daniel Jones pictured at one stage covered in snow by the sidelines.
That second half capitulation gave Exeter their biggest ever win over Wednesday, but they’ve won two of the three encounters since that day, most recently beating Gary Megson’s side 2-1 in 2012 after Jermaine Johnson had given them the lead. They’ve never lost to SWFC at home.
It remains to be seen what sort of side will be tasked with changing that record tomorrow when the Owls face Exeter in the FA Cup, with a number of players and staff at the club having tested positive for COVID-19, but history is certainly not in their favour.

Hide AdSince back-to-back victories in 1978 (both 2-1 at home), Wednesday’s only win over the Grecians was a 3-0 triumph in 2011 after a goal from James O’Connor and a Gary Madine brace – but a young Owls side will have a chance to change that on Saturday.
The Owls face Exeter at 3pm on January 9th.
