IT COULD be a quiz teaser: Name the full-time professional footballer who is a Sheffield lad, a Wednesdayite, an ex-Owls player, and has scored more goals in his league than Gary Madine has notched this season.

The answer is Gateshead Town’s Jon Shaw, who will also be rooting for Wednesday at tomorrow’s Hillsborough beam-back of the Bramall Lane derby.

Shaw has scored 13 goals in 13 games for Gateshead and helped them into second place in the Blue Square Bet Premier Division. The 27-year-old told The Star: “It’s nice to have scored that many at this stage of the season and to see myself above Gary Madine and a few others, but our level is a bit different to theirs!

“I have a look every week to see how Wednesday have got on.

“All my family and friends are still Wednesday fans as well. It’s great that the club have got themselves back on track. I can’t wait to see them back where they should be.”

Shaw, who has been prolific at lower levels since being released by the Owls in 2004, will be playing in an away game today against Luton, who recently had a £50,000 bid for him turned down.

He says his in-laws are Unitedites and have gone quiet since the Owls moved above the Blades.

“It’s nice to see the tables turned. Wednesday have got a good chairman and hopefully he can keep them going in the right direction,” he said.
