The move to halt professional games in England until April 3 at the earliest means Wednesday’s games against Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and West Brom have all been postponed.

If the suspension is lifted then, the Owls’ next fixture would come at Swansea City a day later - although it is understood that the EFL is already preparing for the possibility of it being extended.

The decision leaves Wednesday currently in 15th place, nine points ahead of the relegation places, having lost nine of their previous 14 Championship matches since Christmas.

Wednesday also face the prospect of a potential points deduction if they are found guilty of misconduct over the sale of Hillsborough.

Here’s how Wednesday fans have reacted to this morning’s major breaking news.

@harrietglaves1 Give us the points deduction now and end the season then don’t promote or relegate anyone. Liverpool don’t win the premiership and Wednesday don’t get relegated. Winner #swfc

@ploehmann At last a sensible decision made in the UK - took a long while, though! And why on earth isn't the EFL itself putting the information out first..?

@ChurwellOwl I'm confused. It says they've postponed all elite games for two weeks but ours are cancelled too. Assume it's because of who we are playing then. #swfc

@JoeBryden80 Sensible decision finally - also spares #swfc fans the torture of having to watch this team for a while

@beckamae_ Best thing to happen to Wednesday this year

@BrettAnthonyAs1 Time to use this period to rethink the structure and staff of the club.
