On Tuesday the club announced their first signing of the Monk era in the form of 20-year-old Argentine Manuel Hidalgo, who joined for an undisclosed fee from Italian Serie C outfit Triestina.

The permanent departures of young defenders Jordan Thorniley and Ashley Baker, to Blackpool and Newport County respectively, have also been sealed.

And having confirmed that Hidalgo will start life at Wednesday in the club’s under-23 team, he reiterated his confidence that there will be further reinforcements before the window slams shut on January 31.

“We are down the line with a few situations,” Monk said. “Nothing concrete. Nothing signed and sealed.

“We have definitely progressed down the line a bit further with a few options but still nothing concrete to tell you.

“We want to try and bring in the right type of player in. It can't just be a number or body.

“It has to be the right type of player that I feel can help the group we already have.

“In that process, there is always two clubs and an agent involved or whatever it might be.”

Wednesday have missed out on the likes of Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster, who has joined Swansea on loan, and Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, who will stay with the Gunners.

Southampton winger Josh Sims is a named linked with a possible Hillsborough move along with Crystal Palace target man Connor Wickham.

“The main thing for me when recruiting is having a player that wants to come, wants to be here and wants to contribute,” Monk said.

“That's the main thing you want as a manager and the rest you leave for the club to go through those discussions and negotiations.

“My job is to give an opinion on a player. That is really my input and then it is up to the club to negotiate those things.

“We are a bit further down the line with a couple of options but we are not quite there. Hopefully that can happen as soon as possible.”
