The former Hull City captain is available on a free transfer having left the Tigers in the summer and therefore can be signed outside of the transfer window, which closed last week.

Speaking ahead of the Owls’ Championship clash with Luton, Monk confirmed that the club had taken a close look at Irvine and intimated that contact had been made, before pouring cold water on any notion of an imminent signing.

“We take a close look at everyone,” he told The Star. “Some get further down the line than others and of course Jackson was one of those ones, like many that were on the radar, but these players are on many people’s radar.

“Just about every out of contract player were on a lot of club’s radar.

“Of course he came up in conversations and stuff like that but at the end of the day it’s where it is, he’s not a Sheffield Wednesday player, we don’t have to speculate on any of that and I’m concentrating on the group.

“We’re still looking in the free market, we monitor it, but there’s nothing serious. I’m very happy with the group we’ve got.”

Irvine, a 34-cap international teammate of Wednesday’s Massimo Luongo, left Hull prior to the end of last season after three years.

Asked whether the club are still looking in the free agent market for potential reinforcements, Monk reiterated that while the club’s recruitment team are keeping tabs on certain players, the likelihood of an imminent signing are slim.

He said: “Like every club, you always keep an eye on that market to see what’s available or not, but there’s nothing that stands out at this moment.

“We’re just concentrating on the squad that we have here. There’s always paper talk. I’ll leave that to you guys!

“But there’s nothing serious or imminent. We always keep our eyes on that market but that’s a constant, not just for now, we’re moving forward but there’s nothing serious or interest in anything at this moment in time.”
