Owls boss Garry Monk was forced into the early substitution of Kieran Lee and revealed that the removal of centre-half Julian Börner at half-time was also down to an injury.

Börner struggled through the first half and was replaced by club captain Tom Lees. Speaking after the match Monk made it clear he hoped both would be available for the trip to Brentford.

Moses Odubajo (hamstring) and Massimo Luongo (calf) are understood to have returned to training this week but are short on match fitness.

He said: “Julian felt some tightness in his hamstring and Kieran again had tightness in his calf or his knee.

“I’m hopeful they can play this weekend, we need it. We’ve had a couple of lads back in training this week but they’re not fully fit.

“Whether they’re available or not this weekend we’ll see. But we can’t afford injuries at this time.”

Monk admitted the injuries to Lee and Börner curtailed his gameplan against City, who won 1-0 to take their place in the FA Cup quarter final.

“The plan was to be in touch going into the last 15 or 20 minutes but unfortunately I didn’t have the substitutions I had planned for to try to freshen that and push on in those last few minutes.

“The players tried to do that, but we couldn’t quite do it because we were forced to make substitutions because of injuries. Credit to the players.”
