Garry Monk on Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s Sheffield Wednesday debut as Manchester City product steps up
and live on Freeview channel 276
Dele-Bashiru, who came through the youth ranks at Manchester City prior to joining the Owls before the start of preseason, got his first taste of senior football as he made his Wednesday bow, and his manager thinks that there’s plenty more to come from him and his young teammates.
It is expected that Monk will call on a number of young players over the course of the campaign ahead as he looks to shift the Wednesday squad in a different direction, with the likes of Alex Hunt – who he says nearly started on Saturday – and Liam Shaw amongst a growing list of youngsters who could potentially play a role going forward.

Hide AdSpeaking to The Star after SWFC knocked Walsall out via a penalty shootout, Monk said, “Another positive was a debut for him, and I think you see with the young ones - Alex was very close to starting today - that they’re going to be needed this season, probably more so than normally, with Shawy as well.
“They’ve done really well in preseason, and I think you can see that in them… As well as having experienced players, you need youngsters coming through. I think you can see in them the potential to be very good players.”
Looping back to ‘Fizz’, the Owls boss added, “It’s been his first real competitive taste of a first team environment these last three weeks, and he’s done brilliantly. He got his start today, I thought he was excellent even though he tired towards the end, which is normal for a young lad like that. I’m very pleased with him.”
Next up for Wednesday is a trip to Cardiff City as the Championship resumes on Saturday, and it will be interesting to see what – if any – changes are made to Monk’s starting XI, with the likes of Matt Penney having put his hand up for a spot after an impressive Man of the Match showing in the victory over the Saddlers.
