Argentine superstar Sergio Aguero scored the game’s only goal on 54 minutes with replays suggesting it would have been ruled offside with the intervention of VAR.

The controversial VAR ruling is in use in this season’s FA Cup but only at Premier League grounds where the technology is already in place.

“It was disappointing to lose, especially with a goal that should have been offside,” he said.

“I’d rather lose to a goal that was more legitimate but that’s not to take away from Man City who were fantastic.

“It was a difficult game for us but I felt that we stuck to everything we needed to do and overall I’m very pleased with the level of performance and commitment that we showed tonight against a very good side.”

Monk paid tribute to the performance of Joe Wildsmith, replacing Cameron Dawson in the Owls net. He made a number of saves after failing to keep out Aguero’s shot, but it’s one he should not have faced according to the Wednesday manager.

“It is what it is. I’m not complaining about it, it is what it is.

“It would have been nice to go out to a legitimate one but credit to them, they’re a fantastic team.

“We had to make some good saves and last-ditch tackles and all of that, especially in the second half, but we stuck to it.”

And Monk has no doubt his players can take the credible performance into their ailing league season, starting with Brentford on Saturday.

He said: “In terms of gameplan, when these guys stick to the gameplan and carry it off, that’s why we were third at Christmas. We need to get back to that and tonight hopefully gives the players the confidence to go out and do that.”
