Injuries to Joost van Aken and goalscorer Adam Reach at Blackburn on Saturday lengthened a Sheffield Wednesday injury list already far too long for Tony Pulis’ liking.

The pair were both substituted during the second half of a tightly-fought 1-1 draw at Ewood Park and though the extent of their injuries are as of yet unknown, they look set to join the likes of Dominic Iorfa and Aden Flint on the sidelines.

Another key man who Wednesday supporters should not expect back any time soon is combative midfielder Massimo Luongo.

The Aussie international will be out for a number of weeks having not fully recovered from an operation on his knee earlier this year.

“He’s had a meniscus operation,” Owls boss Tony Pulis said. “His knee has not responded as well as we thought it would and he needs to build up that leg, the thigh hamstring and everything else.

“He still feels a little bit one-sided in terms of the strength of his legs. We have to do that [look after him] or he’ll break down. And that takes a period of time, it doesn’t happen overnight.

“It’ll be a matter of weeks rather than him being close.”

The manic fixture schedule brought about by the suspension of football earlier this year has been a difficult one to manage, Pulis explained.

“We’ve got injuries again today. I know clubs at this level and lower have been pummelled with match after match after match and they’ve got the same issues. We’ve just got to get on with it.

“Adam has done his hamstring and we’ll see what happens there. You think Iorfa, Julian as well. It’s been difficult at times.

He went on: “The load that has been put on football clubs in the Championship, playing so many games before Christmas. They tend to try to force as many games through so if games are called off or if clubs go further in the cup, they’ve got midweeks spare.

“After Christmas I don’t think it’s as busy as there have been. I haven’t had a full week’s training with them and I won’t now until the new year. It’s astonishing really, not being able to work with a team for a full week.”
