Frustrated Tony Pulis opens up on unpaid wages issue at Sheffield Wednesday

His players have yet to be paid in full for last month, a problem the players are working through with the club, he said, before making clear he felt similar issues were being felt at other clubs in the Football League.

Pulis is yet to hold a meeting with Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri over issues he believes need to be ironed-out at the club, though he said he hoped to have that today.

“Listen, it’s a situation that has to be helped by the chairman and the financial director,” he said.

“The chairman has put a lot of money into this football club, so it’s a difficult situation. Most clubs in the Championship and most clubs in the Football League are finding it very, very difficult at the moment with Covid. That’s the best I can do, really.

“I think the players have been speaking to the financial director. Through the financial director, their messages have gone through to the chairman. It must be resolved one way or another.

“Since I’ve worked into the club there are lots of things I could point to, but we’ve not had the run of the ball in some situations.”

The Owls are on a run of nine matches without a win, eight of those under Pulis, who pointed out that their run of four consecutive defeats started when they realised their pay was short.

“From Norwich onwards the players knew the wages were in not in their wage pack,” he said. “Norwich we played exceptionally well and really should have had two penalties. We played ever so well.

“So it’s gone on through this month, from that point onwards to this point.

“The players have to get on with it, we’re football people and we have to get on with it, but it’s very difficult for everybody, I understand that.

“I have got to try to make sure the players focus on the football. I’m here to manage a group of players to win football matches and my concern is only with that.”
