The 35-year-old former Liverpool Academy product made more than 100 appearances spanning three seasons for Wednesday.

He was a member of Alan Irvine’s squad which was relegated to League One in 2010, with his stand-out highlight coming that season when he scored a volley against bitter rivals Sheffield United in a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.

Former Wednesday team-mate Neil Mellor said on Twitter: “One of my best mates in football is calling it a day. Pottsy you have been a great team-mate, opponent and mate on and off the pitch. All the best to you for what comes next.”

His tweet prompted a follow-up message from the Owls, who simply posted: “All the best Darren.”

Potter hangs up his boots after spending just a week with National League side Altrincham.

He also lists Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, MK Dons, Rotherham United and Tranmere Rovers as former clubs.
