Former Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County goalkeeper signs for League One club

Ex-Owl on the move...

Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith has signed for a League One club.

The stopper, 30, made 89 appearances for The Owls between 2014 and 2022 after coming through the academy. The bulk of his outings came in the Championship. Since leaving, he has gone on to win promotion from League One with Derby County before moving to West Brom, who loaned him out to Middlesbrough for a spell last campaign.

Wildsmith has been without a club since departing The Baggies but he has now signed for Wycombe Wanderers, who are 14th in League One, on a free transfer. The Chairboys are without a manager after sacking Michael Duff earlier this month but have won their last two games.

Director of football strategy and data intelligence, Tom Stockwell, said: “We are happy to welcome Joe Wildsmith to the club. Joe is a goalkeeper with a wealth of experience in League One and Championship football. With Conor Hazard away on international duty, and this likely to happen multiple times throughout the season, we thought bringing in a keeper of Joe’s quality gives us the strength in depth to compete across all competitions this season.

“Joe joined the group this morning and was straight into training. He is fit and available for selection this weekend against Reading.”

Wednesday have already played Wycombe, winning 1-0 at Adams Park, with the reverse fixture set to take place on February 9.
