Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal fights off armed trio in home attack

The 54-year-old, who is now manager of top tier Rio Ave, has confirmed that he was arriving home from his side’s 0-0 draw at Marítimo in the early hours when he was approached by three men wearing masks. Reports in Portugal claim they had weapons.
Carvalhal’s son, who was inside the home, arrived to help and the assailants ran. Portuguese police were called to the scene.

Hide AdThe former Owls boss confirmed via social media that he only suffered very minor injuries.
In a message translated from Portuguese, he said: “Yesterday, when I was returning from Madeira to my residence in Braga, I was attacked by three hooded individuals at around 2:15 am. My instinct led me to offer resistance and with the help of my son, José Carlos, we managed to resolve the situation.
“The situation resulted in some abrasions and a bruise, nothing to worry about. I thank you in advance for all the expressions of friendship and solidarity. Braga's PSP was promptly called to the scene and were unsurpassed in support after the incident.
“They took care of the occurrence and I hope that soon they will capture those responsible for this attempted assault.”

Hide AdCarvalhal, who managed Wednesday from June 2015 until December 2017 and led them to back-to-back playoff campaigns, has directed Rio Ave to sixth place in the Portuguese league.
Earlier this season he spoke about his desire to return to management in England.
