Nigel Jemson signed for the Owls from Derby’s bitter rivals Nottingham Forest in 1991 and played 51 league matches for the club before leaving for Notts County three years later.

Posting on Twitter, the former England under-21 international wrote: “Just wanted to wish @swfc all the very best tomorrow in their game against the sheep. Great club with amazing fans. Put aside what’s happened on and off the pitch for 90 mins and get 3 points to stay safe.”

‘The Sheep’ is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Forest fans’ nickname for Derby, who are otherwise known as the Rams.

Nothing less than a win will do for Wednesday, who will also require a favour from Cardiff City, who host Rotherham United, if they are to stay in the Championship.
