Ex-Wednesday keeper Mark Crossley has led the charge on the formation of WATCH – Walking and Talking Charity Hikes – which hopes to raise funds for the support of mental health and also, he has revealed, the NHS.

Fellow former Owls and mental health advocates Dean Windass and Chris Kirkland are involved in the group, along with former Sheffield United forward Jon Parkin.

Crossley has previously hinted at the possibility of a television series documenting the group’s charity efforts, which have been delayed due to the coronavirus crisis.

Explaining the mission statement of the charity on social media, Crossley said: “We’ve got big things planned for the year, a big hill to deal with next year – we can’t say which one yet because it’s not booked. It’s not Notting Hill – it’s a bigger hill than that!

“The charity is for mental health and we’re also getting the NHS involved, especially the frontline workers for the fantastic job that they’ve been doing.”

Crossley – who has developed a cult following on social media for his self-shot videos while out on walks – has been selling hats to raise money.

“The charity itself isn’t official yet because we’ve not been able to get into the banks and we haven’t been able to have an AGM meeting.

“We’re up to £1,600 which is a great start, we’ve got big things planned,” he said.
