The defender had a pretty unhappy time at Hillsborough as he battled injuries, and while the Owls haven’t revealed his departure, the player himself took to Instagram to explain his next move – to Zulte Waragem in Belgium.

Van Aken has signed a two-year deal with the Belgian Pro League side following his exit from Wednesday, and – whilst he’s already been announced – will officially become a Waragem player from July 1st once his SWFC contract comes to an end.

He said on his Instagram page, “I want to thank Sheffield Wednesday for the past four years, I am proud to announce that I will be playing for Essevee for the next few years.”

Meanwhile, he told the club’s official website, “The conversations I had with sporting staff and the people of the club immediately gave me a good feeling,” says van Aken. "I'm looking forward to starting the new season, hopefully with supporters."

The 27-year-old played 33 games in total for the Owls after a big-money move from Heerenveen in the Netherlands, also spending a season on loan in the 2. Bundesliga with Osnabrück.

Van Aken’s new employers finished 10th in the First Division A last season, narrowly missing out on a place in the UEFA Europa League Play-Offs by just a couple of points, and they’ll be hoping to move up a couple of spots next season once their summer recruitment is over.
