'Embarrassed' AFC Wimbledon boss apologises after heavy defeat to Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls recorded a big win on Saturday
‘Embarrassed’ AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson said they ‘got what they deserved’ and apologised after they were hammered 5-0 by Sheffield Wednesday.
The Dons were in the game for 38 minutes until they conceded three times before half-time and another two after the break sent them to a heavy defeat.
Barry Bannan opened the scoring before Davis Keillor-Dunn added a second and Harry Gray a third. Callum Slattery volleyed in a fourth and then Keillor-Dunn netted his second.
“We got what we deserved, which is is nothing,” Jackson said. “I thought we were really, really poor. It is my fifth season here, and to be honest, it's perhaps one of the only times where I have stood here embarrassed, really, by what the team served up today.
“You want to put a team out there that reflects what Wimbledon is all about. And I think 99% of the time that I've been here, we've done that. But today, we didn't.
“I don't think I've had to stand here and apologise to supporters and things like that before now, but I feel like today we owe them an apology, not because we lost, but the manner in the way that we lost and the way that we capitulated really.”
Wednesday made a bright start but the game fell flat before Bannan broke the deadlock. Jackson felt his team had a foothold in the match but three goals in seven minutes took it away from them.
He continued: “With 35 minutes on the clock, I looked round and there's 30,000 people in here, and you can't hear anything because we've kept them quiet. We're in the game, we're comfortable, and we go in 3-0 down because we conceded a goal, and then we just absolutely fall apart. So that’s tough to take because I don't think that's a reflection of this team, but today it is. I have to front that. That's not what I want to see from my football team.
“I can accept defeats. I can accept bad days at the office. It doesn't always go your way. But today just wasn't a reflection I don't think of Wimbledon and the values that that we that we strive for.”
