The ex-West Ham and Norwich City striker joined a long list of people criticising the under-fire chairman following a disastrous season involving points deductions, late wage payments, and three permanent managers.

He told the EFL on Quest show: “Chansiri, the owner, has got a lot to answer for, hasn’t he? Disastrous managerial appointments, you can’t blame Darren Moore too much; he’s been fighting physically for his own health.

"The club has been in a bad, bad position off the pitch for so long and you just wonder now, with what the players wages are going into League One, how that’s going to massively affect them."

In a statement released following relegation, Mr Chansiri said he takes “full responsibility for everything that happens at our club.”

He described the 2020-21 season as possibly the most challenging in Sheffield Wednesday’s history – but pledged to “give everything I can and offer as much support as possible” to achieve promotion from League One next year.

Ashton’s fellow pundit, former Swindon and Luton striker Sam Parkin, said: “It starts way above pitch level with the owner, the six points deducted, loads of managerial appointments, but the players do have to take a little bit of the flack because 29 points lost from winning positions says it all.

"They haven’t been good enough but that is partly down to the recruitment as well, not good enough players brought in.”

No fewer than 11 senior players at the club are out of contract this summer.
