DRONE STOPS PLAY during Sheffield Wednesday's derby clash with Rotherham

Play was stopped for over 10 minutes in the first half of the South Yorkshire derby between Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday after a drone hovered above the New York Stadium.

Referee Jarrod Gillett was forced to stop play on two occasions, eventually taking the players off the field and into their changing rooms after four minutes. The decision was made to protect player safety.

Drones have stopped play in a number of sporting occasions over the past few years, though it is the first time a stoppage of that kind has occurred in a match involving the Owls.

Players returned to the field after a lengthy stoppage to warm-up as safety checks were conducted.

Wednesday conceded just moments after the restart as Jamie Lindsay’s looping header beat Cameron Dawson after lacklustre defending from Garry Monk’s side.

It is unknown at current whether the drone interference is being treated as a police matter.
