Dom Howson: It has not worked out with Moses Odubajo and Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has shown he is not afraid of making hard decisions

When Steve Bruce tapped into his vast network of contacts to sign Moses Odubajo last summer, the transfer was met with universal approval.

Many Wednesdayites described Odubajo as an "excellent signing" and you could understand why the club were delighted to get him on board.

It had become abundantly clear the Owls required extra pace in the wide positions. Bruce quickly spotted this glaring weakness in Wednesday's armoury and looked to address it in the summer transfer window.

Having identified a number of potential transfer targets, Bruce decided to go for Odubajo - a player he had previously worked with at Hull City.

He felt the Owls and Odubajo would be a good fit. He felt Odubajo would offer something different on the flanks.

Odubajo ticked plenty of boxes: he is quick, strong, athletic and able to play multiple positions. Oh yeah, and he is a promotion winner.

Bringing Odubajo on a free transfer looked a shrewd piece of business. Everyone thought Odubajo, a talented player going forward, would improve Wednesday in an area where they appeared light on cover and quality.

But, for whatever reason, it has not worked out. Odubajo has not lived up to expectation.

Although he has shown glimpses of his attacking ability, Odubajo has cost the Owls points with his decision-making at key moments in matches.

Opponents have targeted Odubajo when Wednesday have fielded him at right-back. They have capitalised on Odubajo's poor positional sense and ill-discipline.

Let's not forget that Odubajo has given three penalties away in 14 starts this season, including two in one outing, and was sent off at Derby County for two bookable offences.

Garry Monk gave Odubajo more than enough chances to rediscover his best form. Odubajo started the first six matches of Monk’s reign as Wednesday boss before the October international break.

He was forced to wait over six weeks for his next chance to shine, but he struggled and his red at Derby saw him lose his place in the side again.

Yet it was still a major surprise to see youngster Osaze Urhoghide selected ahead of Odubajo at Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend. Odubajo was overlooked and not even included in the matchday squad.

It has since emerged that Odubajo has been told he is free to leave the club on a permanent or temporary basis this month.

It is another tell-tale sign that Wednesday are looking to clear the decks as Monk, a driven, determined character, bids to reshape his ageing, unbalanced squad.

There is little room for sentiment in sport and Monk has shown his ruthlessness in making Odubajo available for transfer. He knows there is a big rebuilding job to be done and has already demonstrated in a short period of time that he is prepared to ruffle a few feathers and make some tough decisions.
