Intriguing Di'Shon Bernard update as Sheffield Wednesday key figure makes injury return

Considerations will be made on whether Di’Shon Bernard is pushed to make his return to action with Sheffield Wednesday this season or next - with progress continuing to be made on his rehabilitation.

The Jamaica international has been out for over a year with a complicated knee injury that has required a lengthy rehabilitation process. Bernard has suffered setbacks along the way but concern over a further potential issue were eased by the evidence of scans last month.

It was initially hoped he could return to action in March and while would appear to be unlikely as things stand, the idea of him making a return to action in some form has not been discounted. With Wednesday already relegated and a hard season in League One to prepare for, there is no clamour for the 25-year-old to be rushed back.

“He has trained too hard and everything is well,” the Owls boss said. “He trained really, really hard. I think there is a test again next week or the week after, I can't remember. And then we will see if he can make the next progression.”

Asked whether there is a desire to get Bernard on the pitch before the end of the season - or whether the plan is to rest him up for a full run at pre-season, Pedersen said: “It's difficult to say, but he worked really, really hard and we hope that it will be a possibility. But we need to take it step by step.”

In other injury news it was confirmed that Liam Cooper would remain out for the remainder of the campaign but that Manchester City loanee Jaden Heskey should be passed fit after overcoming a knock on his Achilles that forced him out of the defeat to Southampton over the weekend. Pedersen said on the young midfielder: “It was reduced two days ago but yesterday he trained normally so he should be back in the business again.”
