The Owls far from disgraced themselves despite the scoreline but were ultimately defeated by a strong Toffeemen outfit – boasting former Real Madrid man James Rodriguez in their ranks – who eventually eased past the Owls courtesy of strikes from ex-Sheffield United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Yerry Mina.

Caretaker boss Neil Thompson gave a start to new boy Andre Green before he was substituted at the break, while loan striker Jack Marriott made a late cameo for his first appearance in a Wednesday shirt since Garry Monk’s days in the Hillsborough hotseat.

Writing on Twitter, our Owls correspondent Joe Crann posted: “#SWFC well beaten in the end, and Everton deserved winners. Their class and ability shone though in the end - Wednesday just didn’t have enough to do anything about it.

“Plenty of encouraging signs though, and worth noting that the Owls are still very light in terms of personnel.”

But what did Wednesdayites make of tonight’s showing?

Let’s take a look at what they’re saying on Twitter.

@75HagueSWFC Give Thompson the job till the end of the season. He seems to have got us playing in the right manner

@DirtyLyle Well done lads. Just hope we take that passion, fight, passing game and attacking mentality into Wednesday night and onwards.

@lizburgess83 Hopefully the team will take some confidence from this, yes Everton never looked like losing but two of the goals were set pieces, which is fixable and we looked better in that first half going forward than we have in a while

@75HagueSWFC We need to sort out our striker problem ASAP because if not we are going to struggle to stay up. Nothing really wrong with tonight’s performance, especially the first 45. But never looked like scoring again

@WednesdayFansNL Proud of the boys! Did very well against one of the strongest sides in the country. Confident for two very important games next week!

@wannao7 I know the Pulis’ sacking was a shock as a club, but no way would we have tried to play football tonight with him in the dugout. Rather go out 3-0 and keep trying to go forwards than park the bus praying for a last minute set piece winner

@electricgiblets Well played boys. Decent effort overall. Now let's focus on the league.

@x_natalie123 To be expected against a strong Everton side. First half good, plenty of positives. Impressed with Urhoghide and Brennan. The league has to be the priority though. Also give Thompson the job til the end of the season for me. Up the Owls, we go on.

@TomTB1995 Not too bad that, competed. Focus on the league now, 23 cup finals between now and the end of the season. #swfc
