Did somebody mention a goalscorer? – Heroes and Villains from Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat at Bristol City

So the cliché of ‘a game of two halves’ was very relevant for Sheffield Wednesday again this weekend as their opponents upped the ante in the second half to end the Owls’ unbeaten start.

While the defeat is disappointing, I’m pretty sure that before the season most Wednesdayites would have taken four points from Cardiff City, Watford and Bristol City, but with more of a clinical edge it could’ve been much more.

So who were the heroes and villains at Ashton Gate?

Mass Effect

Massimo Luongo was excellent for SWFC on Sunday afternoon. The Australian international was all over the field and was equally as good in recovering possession and using it.

There were a couple of Hollywood challenges from him that were as important as they were impressive, and he made more successful tackles (4) than any other player on the field. I feel like he’ll be really important for Wednesday this season.

The Lees Resurgence

Wednesday might have conceded two, and the whole backline – not just Lees – will be disappointed with the opener, but the Owls centre back did continue his impressive return to form in my eyes.

He had a 100% tackle success (3/3), made the most clearances (7), wasn’t dribbled past at all, and only three players on the field had more touches (61) – also, after three games, no player in the Championship has made more clearances (25).

Long may it continue.

Windass Won’t Worry

It was really pleasing to hear Josh Windass speaking after the game where he insisted that Wednesday won’t be letting things get on top of them after a defeat. Things snowballed for the Owls last season in the second half of the campaign, but he says that things are different now.

He said, “I think this year is a lot different to last year… We’re not going to get too down after a defeat, we’ve got a good squad in there and the manager has really got us together.

“We’re just going to go into next week and be confident again that we can win.”

And A Villain…

It was a good shift from the lads, really, and there was no nonsense from any of the Bristol City players, so I think a villain would have to be something that isn’t actually there… Yet.

Wednesday could do with another striker if you hadn’t noticed.

Callum Paterson looks set to join the ranks soon and Kenneth Zohore remains linked with the Owls, and it’s absolutely no secret that Monk needs some more firepower up front.

The Robins took their chances in the second half and SWFC didn’t take theirs in the first. If Wednesday can make their dominance count – and they’re playing some really good football, too – then this could be quite a fun season after all.

If they can’t find somebody to regularly stick the ball in the back of the net then it will be a frustrating one for everybody involved. Fans, players and manager alike.

Anyway, onto Queens Park Rangers, then…
