Dejphon Chansiri does NOT guarantee Sheffield Wednesday will not break FFP rules in the future

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri guaranteed that the club will not run into FFP trouble when the accounts for the 2018/19 season are handed over. But he conceded it was a guarantee that did not extend beyond that.

Speaking to The Star, the Owls chairman, who has previously accepted responsibility for the breach of rules that led to a 12-point deduction reduced to six on appeal, said there would be ‘no problems’ with the forthcoming accounts fitting into the EFL’s financial regulations.

The regulations have this year been relaxed in order to help clubs cope with the impact of the coronavirus crisis. Wednesday were due to hand over their accounts in March, a deadline that was extended to the end of July for similar reasons.

The club’s wrangling with the EFL over the sale of Hillsborough stadium, and the subsequent appeal, meant the club had to wait to find out which of the accounts the sale should be included in.

There have also been issues in forecasting due to the unknown reality of when clubs will see a return in matchday revenue. As he did in his last media engagement two months ago, Chansiri maintained that the club would hand over the accounts ‘soon’.

Asked outright whether he could guarantee whether the club would not be found to be in breach of FFP in future seasons, he claimed it would be difficult to stay within the financial rules while balancing supporter expectation.

“I will try to make this better, don’t worry,” he said. “I’m going to try so that it doesn’t happen again.

“You have to understand and be realistic. If you’re not going to push, you’re not going to get an issue. If you push, you’re going to get an issue.

“If we don’t push, the fans are going to moan, ‘oh you don’t have any ambition’. If we push of course we need to take risks.

“What do the fans want me to do, they want me to push but then they say, ‘Oh you can’t break FFP’. It is impossible. It’s just £13m, it’s impossible.

“Even when we don’t spend money in the past, we still lose a lot of money. If you spend even a little bit you can still break it.

“It is not easy because of FFP, if we keep [with]in FFP the fans are going to say ‘no ambition’. Some fans blame me for not good management but always ask me to bring the players or tell me to bring the best coach who costs a few million.

“Maybe some fans think we are a big club, a big manager is going to come. You have to be realistic, you might say some Premier League coach that is no way going to come.

“When you are in the Premier League, of course everyone wants to come, we have to be realistic. Sometimes it is easy to say without responsibility.

“Everything I say I have to respect the responsibility. I can say I’ve tried my best. It’s not only use, many clubs have problems with FFP.”
