It was a feeling not unknown to the 27,933 Wednesdayites present in S6 that evening, the fourth time they had celebrated promotion to the First Division in the 1950s alone – the Owls would go up as Champions as they did in 1951/52 and 1955/56. They were promoted as runners-up in 1949/50.

One man who was there for the lot was the goalscorer on that balmy April evening – England international and Wednesday legend Redfearn Froggatt.

By then a veteran at the age of 34, Froggatt would retire from Wednesday action the following year, taking with him 498 appearances and 149 goals.

An expectant Owls faithful shuffled into Hillsborough with Wednesday on a run of four matches without defeat. Not for the last time, city rivals Sheffield United were hot on the promotion heels and Liverpool themselves were still in the hunt, though a run of two defeats on the spin heading into this one made it a must-win for the Reds.

But the stadium – in the final few years of its pre-World Cup development phase – had been something of a fortress, with only Bristol City coming away with a win back in November.

Wednesday went on to win two of their final four matches, wrapping up the title with a game to spare over runners-up Fulham. Sheffield United finished third, Liverpool fourth.
